UK librarians being asked to remove books

From theguardian.co.uk

Although the article makes it seem like this is not worth worrying about just yet, this is precisely the sort of thing that should be accompanied by the deafening sound of alarm bells ringing all around us:

Although “the situation here is nowhere [near] as bad, censorship does happen and there are some deeply worrying examples of library professionals losing their jobs and being trolled online for standing up for intellectual freedom on behalf of their users”, said Louis Coiffait-Gunn, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (Cilip).

It is simply unacceptable that any organisation or body from any country can coerce such decisions, not even within their own country let alone in countries an ocean over. Libraries have every right to hold books intact and, only in cases where books defy modern sensibilities and are used for teaching modern sensibilities, should they be updated (e.g. nursery rhymes).

Everything else must remain untouched—and that includes both books related to LGBTQ+ themes, which seem to increasingly offend certain powerful people, and books on themes like fascism and Naziism, if only because more people should be made aware of their characteristics to prevent their reinfecting society.

This is a note: a brief thought or notable piece of information from my commonplace book. For longer writings, please see ‘Essays’.
